What is the difference between a T4, T4A and RL-1?

For many working people across Canada, a T4, T4A or RL-1 are essential documents for filing taxes. As an employer, you will need to issue the appropriate tax slips to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and your employees by the end of February.

A T4 is issued to employees earning taxable income in Canada; a T4A is given to contractors who do not earn taxable income through your business; and an RL-1 is given to employees who earn income taxable by the province of Québec.

Need help determining which is right for your employees? Don’t worry – we've already taken care of that. The appropriate option will appear for you based on the employee status (contractor or employee) and Province of Employment (PoE) you’ve selected in your Payroll account.
When should I start my year-end tax slips?

You want to start processing your year-end tax slips after your final remittance has been paid for the 2022 calendar year. For many, this should be after the January 15 due date. Processing your tax slips any earlier than your final remittance payment may mean you don’t have all the information you need to complete your summary.

What will I need before I create my tax slips?

Before you create your T4s, we recommend you run the following reports in PaymentEvolution:
· YTD Summary
· YTD Journal

These reports can be created for the T4 year by changing the tax year under

A. Settings

B. Payroll Options
C. Payroll Year

D. Reports
E. Yearly

F. Create a New Report

You will also need to go to your CRA My Business Account and get your statement of account for the payroll year needed. Even if PaymentEvolution sends remittances on your behalf, it is crucial that you verify what CRA reports you’re receiving when completing your T4s.

What will I need before I create my RL-1s?

You will need the following items ready when you go to create your RL-1 slips and summary:

MRQ transmitter number (composed of the letters NP and six digits) See HERE for how to get one if you don’t have one.
RL2-1.S.V filled in with Nov/Dec remittances sent
NEQ (or QC Registration Number 10 digits)
XML initial slip number (provided by MRQ)
Form for calculating CNT
Form for calculating WSDRF
Both CNT and WSDRF form links can be found HERE under items 7 and 8

Where can I find the amount remitted by PaymentEvolution for the tax year?

You can review your ePay Direct Deposit report and filter by Remittances to see what was submitted and when. More importantly, you will also need to go to your CRA MyBusiness Account and see your statement of account for the payroll year needed. Even if PE sends remittances on your behalf, it is crucial that you verify what CRA says you are receiving when completing your T4s.

Can I add a T4/T4A/RL-1 for an employee not in the system?

Yes, you can! As long as you have at least one other employee receiving the tax form you need, you can go to Actions > Year End. From your list of employee slips, click the All Employee T4s drop-down and select Employee T4 Individual. This will show you each employee’s slip individually. In any of the slips, click the ellipses towards the upper right, followed by Add New T4/T4A/RL-1. Enter your employee’s information, save, and the slip will be added to the rest of your employees’ summary information.

Can I edit my tax slips before submitting them?

Absolutely. Once you generate your slips, you can modify any information you need. Changes will save as you make them in the grid, and you should see a small, green confirmation in the bottom right corner.

Please note that any changes made to the tax slips directly will not be reflected in the employee’s YTD information, so the changes will be visible exclusively on the tax form you’re creating.

How do I submit my forms to the government?
With our auto-submission service, you can easily file your T4s, T4As and RL-1s. To do this, select the Automatic Submission option after completing your summary (fees apply).

For T4s and T4As, this will send all the slips and the summary to the CRA and publish them to the employees via PayChequer.
For RL-1s, this will submit the slips to MRQ and your employees on PayChequer, so you will need to submit the summary manually after the fact.

Alternatively, you can opt to submit your T4s yourself by selecting Online Submission or Manual Submission (mail):
Online Submission: once selected, download the Government XML option and upload this file to your CRA MyBusiness account:

Sign into your CRA MyBusiness account
Select File a Return under your payroll section (RP)
Select the Internet File Transfer option
Upload the XML file you downloaded from PaymentEvolution, certify and submit
You will receive a confirmation right on the screen

Manual Submission: once selected for T4s, download the Government PDF file, print them out and mail them to the following address:

Jonquière TC
T4 Program
Post Office Box 1300 LCD Jonquière
Jonquière QC G7S 0L5

How do I get the tax slips to my employees?

The final step of the T4/T4A/RL-1 process is publishing. By clicking this step, employees will be notified that their tax forms are now available on PayChequer. They need to log in, navigate to the menu bar on the left and select Tax Documents.

If you choose the Automatic Submission option, they will be made available to your employees right away.

*Note: For employees who no longer work for you, ensure that the email address in their profile is personal so they can still access their tax slips.

How can I make a change to my finalized tax slips?

On select plans, you can amend a T4 slip after it has been published so you can submit it to CRA.

To amend your tax slips, follow our Amending T4s and T4As Guide.

To amend RL-1s, you’ll need to visit your MRQ portal. See our Amending RL-1s Guide for details.
